Theophany Celebration in greece

The Christian Feast of Theophany or Epiphany is celebrated each year on January 6th. It commemorates the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist and the divine revelation of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Here in Greece this day is a public holiday.

The essential characteristic of this ceremony is the Great Blessing of the waters which can be conducted in church or in open areas of water (sea, river or large tanks). The practice of drinking or sprinkling this water is used to bless oneself or to bless houses. Also, according to the tradition white doves are released symbolising the holy spirit.
The tradition refers to the tossing of the cross into the water as to bless it and the young people΄s efforts to swim, in winter temperature!!, as to retrieve it. The lucky one who graps the cross after swimmers race a competition, is assured for good luck and prosperity during the year.
In the address below you will see how Epiphany is celebrated in the Municipality of Holargos Papagou.
