Ancient Tragedy

“A tragedy, then, is the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself; in language with pleasurable accessories, each kind brought in separately in the parts of the work; in a dramatic, not in a narrative form; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its catharsis of such emotions.” (Imgram Bywater: 35).
Poetics by Aristotle

Once again this summer echo from the theaters, among others, Antigoni's voice, passing through the time, claiming that it is not in her nature to hate but to love and also Ekavi΄s crying words depicting the wounds of the war by saying how unfortunate she is now that she lost her children, homeland and husband.

Those words bring up emotions even today, urging each one of us to experience personal introspection, but also to revise value orientation.

Ancient tragedy! What a multifactor creation! Ancient tragedy is an action that involves mental mobility and alertness, as well as external plotting and appearance.

The viewer participated in all of this by sympathizing with the heroes reaching at the end to “catharsis” meaning in other words renewal, restoration, or revitalization.

Does the ancient tragedy have a place in the modern world? It's like asking if modern people have no questions or concerns. If they remain indifferent to key issues concerning their relationship with the divine, life and death, the limits of their freedom, their attitude against authority, their interpersonal relationships and above all self-knowledge.

How up to date is an ancient tragedy? Ancient tragedy continues its timeless journey and attracts audiences. If you get the chance, live the experience of watching a play in a theatre. We have already seen “Iphigeneia at Aulis”

If you are interested to view the programme for this summer, you can visit this link.
