Odysseas Elytis : from "Axion Esti" to "The Trills of Love" ("Ta Ro tou Erota”)

Odysseas Elytis was born on November 2, 1911 in "Heraklion", Crete island and as he mentioned in the "Song of the Poet"

“November second, the first time on an
Aegean island΄s soil at crack of dawn
I went outside to see the world but I
repented when I felt it all awry”

"Axion Esti" is considered the top creation of Elytis.  Set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, touched the soul and sung by all Greeks.

 ➤"Give me some mint to smell, louiza, and some basil
     With these two to kiss you and what shall i recall first"

His poetry was set to music and became widely known through famous composers including M. Theodorakis, M. Hatzidakis, G. Markopoulos. As Elytis said, "it is a joy to give joy to others, this is that sustains us through life. Thus I have tried to write, along with my poems I also tried to write some songs, without underestimating them at all ".

Elytis was a defender of Greece and adorer of the Greek language. He was a member of the well-known literary generation of the 1930s. His work has been translated into many languages including French, English, German, Italian and Spanish.

On December 10, 1979 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Prize motivation: "for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness."

In his speech in Stockholm, he noted that:

“It is not enough to put our dreams into verse. It is too little. It is not enough to politicize our speech. It is too much. The material world is really only an accumulation of materials. It is for us to show ourselves to be good or bad architects, to build Paradise or Hell. This is what poetry never ceases affirming to us--and particularly in these dürftiger times--just this: that in spite of everything our destiny lies in our hands”

He passed away on March 18, 1996. However, he continues to live through the blue of the sky, the saltiness of the sea, the richness and the vibrancy of the Greek language that he so much respected and served, through his poetry collections.

Ελύτης :Από το “Άξιον Εστί” στα “Ρω του Ερωτα”

Ο Οδυσσέας Ελύτης ήρθε στη ζωή στις 2 Νοεμβρίου του 1911 στο Ηράκλειο της Κρήτης και όπως αναφέρει ο ίδιος στο «Τραγούδι του Ποιητή»

“Πρώτη φορά σ΄ενός νησιού τα χώματα,
δύο του Νοεμβρίου ξημερώματα
βγήκα να δω τον κόσμο και μετάνιωσα
τα «ζόρικα» που λεν αμέσως τα ’νιωσα”.

To “Άξιον Εστί” θεωρείται η κορυφαία δημιουργία του Ελύτη. Το μελοποιημένο "Άξιον Εστί» από το Μ. Θεοδωράκη, ρίγησε την ψυχή και τραγουδήθηκε από όλους τους Έλληνες.

Η μελοποίηση του ποιητικού του λόγου έγινε ευρέως γνωστή μέσα από γνωστούς συνθέτες μεταξύ άλλων Μ. Θεοδωράκης, Μ. Χατζιδάκης, Γ. Μαρκόπουλος. Όπως είχε ανεφέρει και ο ίδιος «Είναι η χαρά να δίνεις χαρά στους άλλους, είναι αυτό που μας βαστάει στη ζωή. Γι’ αυτό, κοντά στα ποιήματά μου, δοκίμασα να γράψω και μερικά τραγούδια, χωρίς να τα υποτιμώ καθόλου».

Ο Ελύτης ήταν υμνητής της Ελλάδας,και λάτρης της ελληνκής γλώσσας. Υπήρξε μέλος της γνωστής λογοτεχνικής γενιάς του ΄30. Τα έργα του έχουν μεταφραστεί σε πολλές γλώσσες ανάμεσά τους γαλλικά, αγγλικά, γερμανικά, ιταλικά και σπανικά.

Στις 10 Δεκεμβρίου 1979 τιμήθηκε με βραβείο Νόμπελ Λογοτεχνίας «για την ποίησή του, η οποία με φόντο την ελληνική παράδοση προβάλλει με αισθησιακή δύναμη και υψηλή πνευματική διορατικότητα τον αγώνα του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου για την ελευθερία και τη δημιουργία».

Στην ομιλία του στη Στοκχόλμη αναφέρει:

«Δεν αρκεί να ονειροπολούμε με τους στίχους. Είναι λίγο. Δεν αρκεί να πολιτικολογούμε. Είναι πολύ. Κατά βάθος ο υλικός κόσμος είναι απλώς ένας σωρός από υλικά. Θα εξαρτηθεί από το αν είμαστε καλοί ή κακοί αρχιτέκτονες το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Ο Παράδεισος ή η Κόλαση που θα χτίσουμε. Εάν η ποίηση παρέχει μια διαβεβαίωση και δη στους καιρούς τους durftiger είναι ακριβώς αυτή: ότι η μοίρα μας παρ' ολ' αυτά βρίσκεται στα χέρια μας».

Έφυγε από τη ζωή στις 18 Μαρτίου 1996. Συνεχίζει όμως να ζει μέσα από το μπλε του ουρανού, την αλμύρα της θάλασσας, από τον πλούτο κα τη ζωντάνια της ελληνικής γλώσσας που τόσο πολύ σεβάστηκε και υπηρέτησε, μέσα από τις ποιητικές συλλογές του.
